The Harvard Choruses present with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Boston Children's Chorus A Child of Our Time Michael Tippett composed A Child of Our Time (1939-41) as a response to the violent atrocities and scapegoating in Europe preceding the Second World War. Inspired by wide-ranging influences from African American spirituals, Jungian psychology, to the modernist poetry of T.S. Eliot, as well as jazz, tango, and the oratorios of Handel and Bach, Tippett’s universal pleas for compassion, unity, and tolerance remain as harrowingly resonant today as they did in his time. The intrepid Boston Modern Orchestra Project joins the Harvard Choruses, along with the Boston Children’s Chorus, the Harvard Alumni Chorus, and four internationally renowned vocal soloists in a rare performance of this seminal 20th-century masterwork. The program also features Trevor Weston’s Griot Legacies (2014), a stirring celebration of the diversity, power, and legacy of the African American Spiritual.
