10/14/2019 Chords of Might: An Evening of Choral Music“To charm, to strengthen, and to teach: these are the three great chords of might.” —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The Radcliffe Choral Society and the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum present a vibrant selection of timeless and timely choral works—across eras, cultures, and contexts—illuminating narratives of joy, persistence, wisdom, and empathy through song. Chords of Might reflects upon the tight bonds between light and darkness, hope and despair, struggle and triumph through treasured works by Lili Boulanger, Johannes Brahms, William Byrd, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Johannes Ockeghem, and Heinrich Schütz, alongside contemporary pieces by Kim André Arnesen, Shawn Kirchner, James MacMillian, Bongani Magatyana, Dale Trumbore, and a world premiere by Michael Schachter ’09. Throughout their combined history spanning over 150 years, the students of RCS and Collegium have gathered as singing communities to seek refuge, to wonder, and to discern truth. Longfellow’s poetry—adorning the façade of John Knowles Paine Concert Hall on Harvard’s campus—reflects this concert’s central aspiration: to reveal the enduring power of choral music as a means of exploring the complexities and possibilities of the human condition. We invite you to share in this musical journey with us in historic Sanders Theatre. Friday, November 1st, 8:00 pm |
